PREFECTURE OF ARGOLIDA
Welcome to the prefecture with the most ancient monuments, the most ancient town in Greece, Argos, and the first capital, of the liberated from Turks Greece, Nafplio. Worth - seeing are some of the most picturesque landscapes of the country combined with the immutable tracks of its ancient history: beautiful beaches, castles, tombs, one of the best maintained pyramids in the world and the most ancient theatre with impeccable acoustics, the theatre of ancient Epidavros.
ARGOS
Argos is the first formed town in Greece, as well as in Europe. It covered an area of 1000 m² in the past and composed a large worksite in ancient times. A lot of ancient secrets are possible to be hidden as it is the only town inhabited on its bones for 4 thousand in succession. Argos was build by Foroneas, son and successor of the first king of Argos, Inahos, and maintains its name till today. It was named, according to the legend, under the name of the grandson of Foroneas, Argos. The whole town was protected by high walls, built during the kingship of Inahos.
The emblem of the town is the head of a wolf, representing the omnipotence of the first integrated town-state in the area of Medirerranean since it afforded great facilities, such as the castle Larisa and the theatre. Among the many churches found in the prefecture of Argolida worth visiting is the church of Zoodohos Pighi, located in Kefalari a small village 6 km outside Argos. Worth mentioning are also the ancient artists for their priceless contribution to civilization and the human kind. Their life's-work, at least as it is today maintained, is kept in the Archaeological museum of Argos.
NAFPLIO
First capital of the liberated, from the Turks, Greece. The first primary school was also accommodated in Nafplio, under the auspices of Kapodistrias. Today, Nafplio is the capital and administrative centre of the prefecture of Argolida, but also an important touristic centre. With its buildings, renowned castles and generally the whole layout of the city makes Nafplio one of the most beautiful places in Greece. The fortress complex of Nafplio is extensive and imposing. The oldest fortress of all is Akronafplia, in the homonymous peninsula. On the opposite rocky hill rises the famous Palamidi. Bourtzi is found in front of the harbour, in the shallow waters, and was connected, during the old times, by chains with the land, which is also the reason it was called Porto Cadena. All three castles are remarkable not only for their archaeological importance but also for their incredible adjustment in the place's topography. The city itself includes many praiseworthy monuments, such as the imposing Venetian arms depot - which is maintained intact and accommodates the Archaeological museum -, the Mosque in Syntagmatos square, the church of Saint Spyridonas, famous because on the entrance of which Kapodistrias was murdered, the Bavarian lion, and other buildings along the mole which compose this rare architectural and urban plan whole making Nafplio distinguish as the best preserved example of a neoclassical city of the 19th century. |
