PREFECTURE OF ARTA
The
prefecture borders north with the pref. of Ioannina, west with the
pref. of Preveza, east with the prefectures of Trikala and Karditsa,
south with the pref. Aitoloakarnanias and getting wet from the
Ambrakiko Gulf.
To the double delta of the rivers Louros and Arachthos at the Ambrakiko
Gulf exists one of the biggest aquatic-place of Greece, which has been
maintained in his natural condition.
Τhe
history of the district is immediately connected with the history of the
capital, which is built in the place of the ancient Ambrakia. Ambrakia
was built at the end of the 7th century BC by Kyphselo,
tyrant of Korinthos,the same time with Lefkada and Anaktorio. Their
establishment is concur with the cutting of the coin of Korinthos and
the historical having the opinion that the places, specially Ambrakias
and Anaktoriou (in the entrance of Ambrakikou Golf), have been chosen so
that they could inspect the silver layer of Illyria. Many other are

of Sparti. In 295 BC she was occupied by the King of Ipiros Pyrros and
he made her the capital of his state.Ambrakia was living her last
brilliance. Later she passed to the Romanian just like all Greek
cities-and after the built of Nikopolis by August, she has been
abandoned and desolated. For first time the name of the contemporary
city, Arta, is refereed by Anna Komnini in 1081.At the beginning of the
13th century Arta has became the capital of the Despot of
Ipirou, the first Greek state, which was establishment by Michael A'
Aggelo Komnino and it has been decorated with magnificent churches. In
14th century she was conquered by the Serbs and other
conquerors until the 1449 when she fell, and was occupied by Turkey.
The annexation of the Prefecture of Arta at the successively extended,
Greek State, was the same time with Thessalia in 1881, with the Berlin
Contract. Earlier she was coloured with the blood of the fighters at the
Monastery of Seltsou, in 1803, at the Piges and in 1822 in Peta and was
gloried with the victory of the Fillelinon in Koboti, the birthplace of
the amicable Nicholas Skoufa. The Prefecture of Arta has given in
Revolution one more worthy child of her, Georgio Karaiskaki,who as a son
of a nun, was born at the Monastery of Skoulikarias, which it's ruins
are still saved. Finnaly from Arta began his revolution actions
Makrigianis.In the younger history, the Prefecture of Arta followed the
destiny of the rest Greece. During the German occupation the Kommeno was
suffered hart with the holocaust of the village. In memory of the bitter
events, every year, from 1until 20 August are founding there place
manifestations.
Arta is
the capital of the prefecture and of the province of Arta, centre
homonym municipality. Built in the rich plain of Arta or Ambrakia, Arta
is the only commercial centre of agrarian products of the Prefecture.
She has got factories of juices, rice mills, weaving factory and
different handicrafts. The mental activity of the city condenses at the
music-literary association Skoufas. This association maintains a library
and organizes cultural lectures and amateurish theatrical performances.
At the city of Arta is preserved the grave of the poet Costa Kristalli.
His bust is raised left to the street Agrinio-Ioannina as you get in to
the city. Besides in the entrance of the Byzantine Castle exists and the
bust of Gianni Makrigiani. |
