Zagorochoria: These are 46 villages scattered on the mountains. They have got a natural beauty and a special architecture. The vegetation is luxuriant - towering pine and fir - trees. Zagori is a Slavic word meaning a place behind the mountains. Many of these villages are the homelands of national benefactors.
The
tradition passed from father to son. The craftsmen of any kind became
very famous combining the ancient, Byzantine and Christian tradition.
The education was organized. Most villages had secondary and high
schools. The education of women was not neglected. The first Girls
school was founded in 1846 in Monodendri. Women also contributed to the
development of Zagori. The doctors of Zagori were also famous for the
herbals picking from Vikus. Others reached high ranks of the Turkish
administration, eg Pashaloglou who was the doctor and the adviser of the
Sultan Mahmout II. Two other doctors, Exarhou and Zonias would put mould
on the wounds, years before Fleming discovers penicilin. Monodendri: It is typical of the villages of Zagori, built in an elevation of 1000 m. It is picturesque, the houses are well built and the streets are covered with stones. It dominates the gorge of Vikus. It is 41 km away from Ioannina. Few kilometres away there are the springs of Voidomati. The view is unique. Those who want to cross the gorge (5 hours on foot), there is a path. |
