Trikala. Trikala is the capital of the homonymous prefecture, with population of roughly over 75.000 residents. The current city is built in the place of ancient "Trikki", that according to the history was Penaeus's daughter. It is the place where the first "doctor without borders", Aesculapious was born (1247 b.c). A Part of the famous in the antiquity sanctuary of Aesculapious has been discovered and the archaeological hoe brings in the light new discoveries. In the east entry of the city the visitor meets the unique and eminent Koursoum mosque. It is a work of the Architect Sinan Passa and it was built by Greek craftsmen. It was rebuilt from its ruins during 1992-1996 by the Municipality of Trikala with the financing of EU and it is protected from UNESCO. There are many places that worth a visit in Trikala and the whole region. The central bridge of the city, manufactured in 1886, the Fortress with its clock, the old district of city precisely under the Fortress, the zoo on the hill of Saint Ilias, the Folklore Museum, the Municipal Art gallery, the Katsikogiannis painting Museum, the Centre of Popular Music with exhibits relevant to the most famous Greek Musicians of Popular music like Tsitsanis, Virvos, Kaldaras, Samoladas and others. Meteora - Kalambaka Above the city of Kalampaka, raise perhaps the most impressive geological phenomena, the rocks of Meteora. Meteora were formed by depositions of a big river (maybe Aliakmonas River) 60 millions years ago. In the steep and naked tops of the rocks, the state of Eastern Orthodox Asceticism was created. Twenty four monasteries initially and seven today, keep the interest of thousands of visitors alive. Twenty four monasteries were founded occasionally, the one better than the other. The first years they were unknown (9th-12th centuries). Since the 14th century however, we have more concrete elements about the history of the monasteries of Meteora. Finally, in case you visit the region, you must visit the Cavern of Theopetra. It is an impressive cavern in which the oldest imprints that have ever been discovered in Greece were found . |
