PREFECTURE OF GREVENA

 

 

      During the Macedonian war approximately the complete population from the area took part. With the dedication from the residents, Grevena was liberated from the Ottoman Empire on October 13th, 1912. During the Greek-Italian war (during the WWII) the residents of Grevena were involved to a large extend. Not only as a soldiers (etc. First battalion which entered Koritsa was the Grevena's battalion), but the unarmed people took part during the war using any means they were able to find and help. Most of the unarmed residents for the Grevena area were helping transporting arms, food, clothes, etc. to the soldiers, with the result, on November 1st-8th in 1940 to destroy Tzoulia division from the Italian army at Anitsas Filippaion. The fights against the German-Italian forces were organized until March 1943 when it was set free from the external forces after the destroyed and captured in Fardikampos [bridge of Alliakmona (Αλιάκμονα)] the Italian's battalion which oversee the area of Grevena, after the attack from the people from the areas Grevena, Boiou and Siatistas.

        The prefecture of Grevena is mainly agriculture area. There is where the National forest of Pindos, which is one of most important National forest in the country. The impressive view with the beautiful vegetation, large falls and the small rivers with a lot of water and strong current. It is worth it to visit the National Ski Resort Vasilitsa, which is located approximately 30 miles from Grevena, in the heart of mountain Pindos. Also, monasteries (Osiou Nikavora and Euaggelistras in Panagia, Koimnsns Qeotokou at Spilaio and Saint Paraskeuns at Samarina) around the prefecture of Grevena are something that you need to visit if you are in the area.
