PREFECTURE OF DRAMA

The Prefecture of Drama lies on the northeastern edge of Greece on the border with Bulgaria. In terms of natural environment it is the richest prefecture. The Rhodopi mountain range to the north, the Menikio range and the Orvilos range to the west, Mount Pangeo to the south and the Lekani Mountains to the east surround it. The mountainous massif, which dominates the horizon, is Falakro, the "mountain symbol" of Drama.
In administrative terms the prefecture falls within the Eastern Macedonia-Thrace Region and is divided into eight municipalities (Drama, Kato Nevrokopi, Prosotsani, Nikiforos, Paranesti, Doxato, Kalambaki and Sitagri) and one community (Sidironero).

Essentially the prefecture is agricultural. There are large cultivated areas in the plains, which extend over the southern part of the prefecture. Full exploitation of water resources (particularly on the Nestos and Angitis rivers and the Kefalari springs) and the use of modern cultivation techniques have significantly improved the agrarian economy in recent years. The rich forests of the prefecture, its mountain slopes and rivers and caves, the churches, monasteries, castles and bridges all come together to make up a unique area in terms of the wealth and variety of things for a tourist to do. Such a wealth of natural and manmade beauty and history throughout the whole prefecture calls upon us to explore it and get to know it better .

The Prefecture of Drama gives us the chance to wander through unique spruce forests; to enjoy the monuments left to us by mother nature (caves, gorges and so on); to trek in the mountains or climb mountains or cliffs; to walk along cultural routes by visiting Byzantine and post-Byzantine monasteries and churches, archaeological sites and local museums; to attend popular cultural events and to take part in local church festivals or artistic happenings.
The environment allows us to engage in agro-tourism getting to know the way of life and the hospitable residents of the area better by following all forms of agricultural activity. And if we want to satisfy our environmental interests we can admire the rare species of flora and fauna up close, which find a home in the rich forest, and water ecosystems of the area.
In order to cater for tourist needs a significant network of tourist facilities is being completed set among the forest and agricultural environment of the prefecture, these facilities being suitably incorporated into the landscape. At the same the time hotel facilities in Drama offer their services, at adequate levels, to those who prefer the hospitality of the city .

The prefecture of Drama is very close to two of the most important archeological sites of Macedonia, Fillipoi and Amphipoli. It's also very close to the island of Thassos, the only island of Macedonia. You can easily plan daily excursions to Drama and to the other surrounding Prefectures, if you are staying at Thassos. You can combine the holidays on a beautiful island and you will also have the opportunity to see more sights at the mainland which is very close to Thassos.
The area of Drama provides those wishing to engage in air-based sports such as han gliding or gliding or microliting with important natural pistes from where to take off such as the slopes of Mounts Falakro and Menikio and the Lekani mountains. Sportsmen can use the take-off site in the area of Pyrgi - Petrousa at an altitude of 1,200m to head Southeast, south or southwest. The 3km route from Pyrgi to the take-off site is along an accessible dirt path. The take-off site at Korylovo at an altitude of 650m just outside the city of Drama can also be used to head southeast, south or southwest. A five minute flight here will bring one over the center of Drama city. The plains of Drama are an ideal place to touch down.
