The Prefecture of Drama Today
The Prefecture of Drama lies on the northeastern edge of
Greece on the border with Bulgaria. In terms of natural environment
it is the richest prefecture. The Rhodopi mountain range to the north,
the Menikio range and the Orvilos range to the west, Mount Pangeo to
the south and the Lekani Mountains to the east surround it. The mountainous
massif, which dominates the horizon, is Falakro, the "mountain
symbol" of Drama. Essentially the prefecture is agricultural. There are large cultivated areas in the plains, which extend over the southern part of the prefecture. Full exploitation of water resources (particularly on the Nestos and Angitis rivers and the Kefalari springs) and the use of modern cultivation techniques have significantly improved the agrarian economy in recent years. The rich forests of the prefecture, its mountain slopes and rivers and caves, the churches, monasteries, castles and bridges all come together to make up a unique area in terms of the wealth and variety of things for a tourist to do. Such a wealth of natural and manmade beauty and history throughout the whole prefecture calls upon us to explore it and get to know it better . The
Prefecture of Drama gives us the chance to wander through unique spruce
forests; to enjoy the monuments left to us by mother nature (caves,
gorges and so on); to trek in the mountains or climb mountains or cliffs;
to walk along cultural routes by visiting Byzantine and post-Byzantine
monasteries and churches, archaeological sites and local museums; to
attend popular cultural events and to take part in local church festivals
or artistic happenings. |
